2023 Met Gala Looks We Loved

Every year, on this particular Monday everyone interested in or working in Fashion comes together to see the who and what of the Met Gala. Met Gala is an annual fundraising ball hosted by the Metropolitan Museum of Arts for their Costume Institute. Since3 1995, Vogue’s Editor in Chief, Anna Wintour has been organizing the Met Gala. Despite everything no one has been able to match the poise and looks of the queen of Met Gala Blake Lively who was not present this year. This year’s Met Gala theme was a tribute to legendary Karl Lagerfeld, the mastermind behind Chanel, Fendi, and Chloe in contemporary times. While we won't be extensively reviewing each outfit, here are some of our favorite looks of the night.

1. Rihanna

The Met Gala doesn't Gala without Miss RiRi, after skipping the event last year, she returns this year with Asap Rocky and her second child (who is on the way). According to Rihanna, each of the rose appliques on her coat took about 30 hours to make. Nothing screams Met Gala like appreciating handcrafted designs. Her dress pays a good homage to Lagerfeld’s bridal looks which he was exclusive about. Kind of ironic and iconic to wear bridal (virgin) white while being pregnant but that is Rihanna for you.

2. Anne Hathway

Anne Hathaway as the new face of Versace was seen in the most perfect and ideal Versace X Chanel look. The arm warmers, dress slits, and safety pins were all giving big Versace nods. The inclusion of tweed, camellia flower appliques, and classic Chanel pearls detailing were incorporated as a tribute to Lagerfeld. Overall this goes in the huge style portfolio of Hathway’s style renaissance with her comeback as Hollywood’s best-dressed celebrity.

3. Doja Cat

Miss Doja Literally Choupette Cat has stolen the show for us again. She is dressed in an Oscar De La Renta white crystal-embellished halter neck gown while being dressed as Lagerfeld’s pet cat Choupette. The inclusion of the cat ear hood into the outfit is a spectacular move as already mentioned by Youtuber Mina Le. Jared Leto wished he could pull off Choupette like this, but however, no one comes near Doja’s iconic and experimental looks on the Red (and beige) carpet looks.

4. Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae was spotted wearing Thom Browne, in an oversized black and white asymmetrical tweed jacket. A classic Browne tribute to Karl Lagerfeld. The best thing about their look was not the structured skirt but the Choupette cat-shaped bag making it the most on-theme outfit of the entire night. With the personality of both Monae and Browne, they were able to create something very true to them and Lagerfeld’s creative vision.

5. Michelle Yeoh

The Oscar winner was spotted in a Karl Lagerfeld Couture tuxedo-style gown. Her gown included an outer layer of black fabric with a higher thigh slit and alone train. The slim silhouette of the skirt was balanced out by the extravagant puffed sleeves on the bodice. The ultra-feminine look was balanced out in classic Lagerfeld style with leather thigh-high boots which included chain detailing.

6. Priyanka Chopra Jonas

PCJ and Nick Jonas were sighted in Valentino in the classic black and white ensemble. Chopra’s ruffled train contrasts the edgy and simple thigh slit gown. Nick Jonas’ classic tux look has been Lagerfeld-ified by the choice of including a leather blazer instead of the classic fabric. The edginess complimented Jonas’ wife’s look perfectly.

7. Cai Xukun

Cai Xukun, popularly known by his stage name Kun, is an actor in the mainstream Chinese entertainment industry. Kun who is only 24 years old made a huge impact on his very first Met Gala by wearing Prada, who took his own spin on Karl Lagerfeld's uniform look. The inclusion of pearl embellishments right from the coat to the tie was a chef’s kiss move.

8. Alia Bhatt

Another debut of the evening, Bollywood’s fashion icon, Alia Bhatt’s first Met Gala was nothing less than glamorous. She was spotted in a Prabal Gurung gown inspired by Karl Lagerfeld's bridal gowns which had intensive pearl embellishments which went as long as the trail of the train of her gown. The look included fingerless gloves with pearl embellishments which were spot on the Met Gala 2023 theme. Least to say Alia and Prabal understood the assignment.

9. Florence Pugh

Miss Pugh never misses and she did not disappoint this time either. Shaving your hair off for the Met is a whole new level of dedication. The headpiece is not our favorite but we do love the little black ribbon over the bodice for a defined look. The simple streak of contrast added a whole new dimension to the look and we all love a long train during the Met for all the luxury drama.

10. Lizzo

Big voice, big personality, and big pearls, that’s Lizzo this Met Gala 2023 for us. She looked like the Chanel version of Barbie Fereras’s pearl ensemble from 20XX. However, it is a massive hit, it reminds us of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany's; it's giving exactly what Lizzo is and stands for. However, she saved the best for later when she changed into a Fendi mirror-embellished coat and bodysuit for her Met Gala 2023 performance inside the dinner room. No matter how many times someone wears a silver bodysuit and metallic thigh-high boots to any performance there is something so iconic about that one outfit.

11. Bad Bunny

Bad Bunny at the Met Gala 2023 showed everyone the capabilities of making menswear look sexy and showing skin. The trail of Chanel’s camellia flowers. Bad Bunny was dressed by none other than Jacquemus at the event. He stole the show and the internet’s heart and became the IT celebrity for men's fashion. We hope male celebrities retire the old tux and take risks like Benito here.

12. Jenna Ortega

Channeling Wednesday in Chanel Lagerfeld-inspired couture, Ortega was dressed head to toe in Thom Browne. Every detail of this outfit was just chef’s kiss, with imbibing Jenna’s current persona and style with the Met Gala theme is a work of genius. Right from the gold chain detailing that runs from the cropped jacket to the skirt’s train which was made from tweed, to the mismatching sheer socks and tuxedo shoes; everything is right on theme and unique to Jenna Ortega.

13. Jennie Kim

Miss YG’s princess, lead rapper from one of the influential K-pop groups Blackpink; Jennie Kim’s Met Gala debut. As the muse for Chanel and their brand ambassador, it is only fitting for her to wear this archival piece from the 90s. Her dress included Chanel’s signature camellia flower in the center with a black ribbon running across Kim’s ribs. The scallop detailing on the dress with pleats makes this a classic Chanel look.

14. Conan Gray

Gray in 2018 said that if he ever gets to attend the met gala he won't ever wear a bland suit unless that's the specified theme, oddly this year’s theme indirectly revolved around sticking to black and white clothes but he did not disappoint. A classic twist on a simple Chanel suit to make him look like the prince of Chanel. This look went under the radar but is truly a hit for us!
